This image is based on a drawing of a fresco on the wall of one the artist’s favourite pubs and is one she has returned to in a number of her works. For her the imagery is full of contradictions; it is both charming and playful but also nods to darker connotations of hunting. It is not just the image but the technique that is imbued with these incongruities. Harriet Gillett is riffing off the textures and line work that you might find within 12th Century cave paintings, while using ancient dry point tools and traditional Japanese paper, whilst updating it through imprinting it on the back of an old smoothie packet. This method has created four unique etchings, which the artist sees as Contemporary relics, playful takes on what we might leave behind.

In all Gillett’s work, literature is a key inspiration and text is sometimes added to suggest another layer of meaning to an image. Unlike with her large scale paintings, printmaking allows her to be more playful and experimental.
